Pool Deck Resurfacing in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, FL

A pool deck takes sun, water and bare feet every day. Resurfacing gives worn or cracked concrete a new, slip-resistant surface, or replaces it with pavers.

Pool deck resurfacing puts a new surface on the deck around a pool. On a concrete deck, one way is a coating: one maker’s data sheet describes its product as a “slip-resistant acrylic coating for concrete and asphalt” and lists “Swimming pool decks” among its uses. The other route is a new surface laid over or in place of the old one; Pebble Technology International’s planning guide lists “new decking or pavers” as part of a pool project.

Pool deck resurfacing options

A coating over the concrete. An acrylic coating goes on in coats. The same data sheet gives, at 70°F and 50% relative humidity, “4 hours between coats”, “8 hours for light foot traffic” and “24–36 hours for heavy pedestrian traffic”. Slip resistance is part of what the coating is for: the maker calls it a “slip-resistant safety finish”.

Pavers. Pavers replace the surface rather than coat it. Pebble Technology International’s planning guide lists decking and pavers right after the coping, which is why they fit naturally into pool remodeling, where the coping and waterline tile are planned with them.

Whichever you choose, ask for the product’s data sheet. It is where the slip resistance, the weather limits and the cure times are written down.

Heat underfoot

Paving gets hot in the sun. The EPA describes a pilot study in Arizona in which conventional paving such as asphalt reached “surface temperatures up to 152°F at mid-day, while the surface temperature of cool pavements remained 10 to 16°F cooler.” That is a study of pavements, not pool decks, but the EPA notes that cool pavements can be made with “coatings” as well as with standard materials. Ask how hot a surface gets in full sun before choosing a color or material.

Cracked or lifting decks

No official or maker’s source we found explains why a given pool deck cracks or lifts, so none is offered here. A deck that has cracked or moved should be looked at in person before a coating goes on. Where the deck meets the pool is the coping, “where the pool structure meets the deck” in Pebble Technology International’s words; a crack along that line is worth pointing out at the visit.

The weather the work needs

Southwest Florida’s humidity matters here. The coating maker’s data sheet says not to apply its product “when the relative humidity is above 70%” or when the surface is below 60°F, or will drop below 60°F within 24 hours. Ask how the work will be scheduled around humidity and rain.

Deck permits in Cape Coral and Fort Myers

Cape Coral has a permit type for residential pool deck additions: “Use this permit type for residential (1 or 2 family homes) pool deck additions.” Its guideline does not address resurfacing an existing deck, so ask the Building Division. Fort Myers requires building permits to “construct, alter, repair and move or demolish a building or structure”; for a deck, ask the city whether yours needs one. Pool repair in Fort Myers covers the city’s other rules.

Questions, answered

Pool Deck Resurfacing questions

Can pool deck coatings be applied in humid weather?

Check the product's own limits. One maker's data sheet for a slip-resistant acrylic deck coating says not to apply it "when the relative humidity is above 70%" or when the surface temperature is below 60°F, or will drop below 60°F within 24 hours, and that cooler temperatures or high humidity "will greatly extend drying times."

Do I need a permit to resurface a pool deck in Cape Coral?

Cape Coral has a residential permit type for pool deck additions. Its guideline does not address resurfacing an existing deck, so ask the City of Cape Coral Building Division before work starts.

Can a concrete pool deck be resurfaced?

Yes. Acrylic deck coatings are made for it; one maker's data sheet describes its product as a "slip-resistant acrylic coating for concrete and asphalt" and lists swimming pool decks among its uses.
