Pool Repair in Fort Myers, FL: Resurfacing, Leaks and Pumps
Fort Myers runs its own permits and its own water plant, and its housing is older than Cape Coral's. Here is what that means for pool repair and resurfacing in the city.

Pool repair in Fort Myers
Pool repair in Fort Myers covers the same work as anywhere in Lee County, from pool deck resurfacing and pool leak detection to pool resurfacing and pool pump repair. What changes inside the city is who issues the permit, what comes out of the tap and how old the houses are.
Permits. The City of Fort Myers issues its own building permits. It says “building permits are required from the City of Fort Myers to construct, alter, repair and move or demolish a building or structure”, that “contractors must register with the City of Fort Myers to obtain a permit within our jurisdiction”, and that it “requires proof of license from contractors who pull permits for properties located in the city”. For pool finishes the city is specific: its permit list shows “In-Ground Pool Bottom Refinishing” as needing no permit for residential property and a permit for commercial property. Cape Coral handles it differently: its Building Division has a residential Pool Renovation permit and does not say whether resurfacing counts.
City limits. The rules above cover properties inside the city. Lee County’s permit center says projects within Fort Myers “may need to apply for permitting through your local jurisdiction”, so for a Fort Myers mailing address outside city limits, ask Lee County or the town the address falls in.
Water. “The City of Fort Myers Water Treatment Plant uses a reverse osmosis process to purify brackish (salty) water provided by the Floridan Aquifer,” the city’s 2025 water quality report says. The report gives no hardness figure, so none is given here. SGM, a Florida plaster maker, writes that water running low on pH or calcium etches plaster and water running high scales and stains it, and a pebble-finish maker recommends testing the source water before a new finish is filled.
Homes. The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (2020-2024) counts 48,984 housing units in Fort Myers. 24.3% were built in 1979 or earlier, against 15.2% in Cape Coral; 36.1% are single-family detached homes, against 79.4% in Cape Coral; and 49.1% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. A house’s age is not its pool’s age, but it is one reason to ask how old the finish and equipment are.
Before work starts, look the contractor up at myfloridalicense.com; the city will ask for proof of license when the permit is pulled. For comparison, pool repair in Cape Coral sets out that city’s permits, water and housing.
